Wow...I do read fast!

I like to do a lot of things fast...unless it's something I really don't want to do, in which case I procrastinate. :) But other things I do fast...walking, eating, driving, and reading for example. Especially the reading; which is sometimes good, and sometimes not. As is speed in most things, I guess.

I didn't realize quite how fast I read though! I took several speed tests online and I'm in the 350-500 range for fiction and 200-250 for study reading. Ha, big difference there. I kind of expected that...I'm not sure why I have more trouble with study reading but I do.
But the 350-500 (and it was usually closer to the 500 and one was over that) really surprises me! I guess mostly I'm thinking, "do other people really read that slow?!" And I don't mean that disparagingly, I'm just so used to reading fast that it seems normal. :) What's more, I read slower from a computer screen, so presumably when I'm reading a book I'm going even faster than that. Wow. Well, that would be one reason books don't last me very long. :)

Here's one of the websites: this one has the best system, plus you get to read about the Titanic, so if you were lacking in knowledge about the Titanic, you can learn about it on here. :)

Unfortunately, I sometimes also have a problem with reading comprehension. Not usually with fiction, but with studying, which is when you need to...um, especially comprehend what you're reading. :p I think that's part of the reason I have trouble with that, because I'm really working on slowing down and taking in everything that I'm reading and that ends up causing a lot of "regression" as these speed reading websites call it. And I have trouble concentrating and have to have quiet to read. I just really don't get why I don't have that problem when I'm reading fiction. I remember what I read from a fiction book, so it's not that I'm not retaining the information. But even the most interesting...history book for example...is a lot harder for me to read. Hmm...strange.

Actually I think I'm getting better at slowing down and reading things at a little more leisurely pace, so that's good. But I'm probably still reading pretty fast. :D

Oh, in other news, I feel much better! My right hip was really hurting me last night and this morning and I thought it was just really sore, but at some point this afternoon I felt something sort of pop back into place *shudders*...and it felt a whole lot better. I really could have done without the popping, but oh well, it's better than being in pain. It's so wonderful to be able to step sideways, or in any direction other than just forward and back, without it being extremely painful! (And you don't realize how much you do that until you can't.) It is still sore, but that will go away soon and it doesn't interfere with walking. I'm quite, quite happy about that! Especially since I need to get to work helping Mom get ready for Thanksgiving.

My cousins are coming on Wednesday, and I'm working Tuesday, so we don't have a whole lot of time really. And my room is a disaster, as usual. :( I've definitely got some cleaning to do...
I'm really looking forward to Thanksgiving though. :)

Hm.... I got a 516 on the speed, but then it wouldn't calculate my score when I took the comprehension test. Humph. I definitely have the same problem though, Natalie... I remember fiction easily, but no matter how fun the study reading, I have to force myself to really go slow, or I just don't remember it.

I'm glad your hip feels better now!

How long will your cousins be in town? Will they come to church?

Yeah, I couldn't get it to work either, Lizzie. Which is a shame, because I was curious about that.

No, they're leaving Saturday, Amanda.

The comprehension wouldn't work for me either. However, my results were kind of interesting. I got 301 wpm when I read the "fictionalized" tale of the Titanic, but 327 wpm for the study reading. I think the reason for that was that the study reading was actually much more interesting than the fiction, and the fiction was poorly and boringly written. I also found out that I sub-vocalize. I thought everyone did that. I always hear little voices in my head for characters in a book.

I couldn't get the comprehension to work either. >:(

I got about 670 wpm for the light reading and 600 wpm for the heavier reading. But then again, the reading conditions given were not optimal (reading from computer screen, wide column of text), so it may be higher than that.

Then again, who wants to be able to read a novel at ~700 wpm? The slowest I seem to be able to go comfortably is 570 wpm, which is still much too fast.

I got 372 wpm on the "light" reading and 390 on the study reading...which surprised me because I usually read fiction much faster than that. But if that Titanic thing was novel-length I wouldn't have wanted to finish it...maybe that's why :)

Wow...Johnathan....

Exactly, Rebecca...if I wasn't trying to get a real feel for how fast I read I would have just skimmed the Titanic thing because it was not interesting. And I think I read normal, interesting things faster than that. I can even read Shakespeare faster AND comprehend it...
