We've had problems for years, ever since we moved here: the phonebook has not stopped listing the name of the people who used to have this number. They also list their new number, but despite calls to the company, they still keep listing the other people twice. Once with our number, and then with their new one. So when we get calls for the other people, we usually tell them they have the wrong number and if the caller gives us time, explain that they need to call the other number.
SO, Mr. I. (the person who used to have our number) just called. Without even asking for any of us, he just started in with, "I'm 'Mr. I.', WHY can't this phone company get these numbers straightened out??! They still have me listed as this number, and you're listed under that number too, right??"
Me: "Yes...I don't know why they can't get it right..."
I. : I haven't had that number for years, and they still have it listed wrong!"
He just went on and on, and finally finished up with telling me that if we got any calls for him, to tell them to call the other number that's in the phonebook! But he sounded the whole time like he thought I should be doing something about it! It's not my fault they mess it up, and I certainly don't know why it's messed up! And if we have a chance we explain that to the people who try to call him here.
It's not a big deal really, but his manner of addressing it irked me...I wouldn't have minded a polite, "could you please tell them to call the other number if they call there?" Good thing he didn't dial the number wrong either...if he'd started in like that to someone who didn't know what he was talking about, they would have thought he was crazy!
Hmph.
