...are there no blackberry farms in this area? Do blackberries not grow well right around here? I was looking online for listings of places that sell blackberries or raspberries and a lot of them seem to be either in the Sanford, Fuquay-Varina, Smithfield area, or around Asheville...and one in Stokesdale. They also don't all have websites...which is not a big problem, but I like to be able to look at a website to get an idea of what the place is like.
I was thinking about planting some blackberries and raspberries next year, but if they don't grow right here that won't work. Although, now that I think of it, there are tons of the wild blackberries around, so presumably the nicer ones would grow, but nobody's selling them here?
On the other hand, there's a blueberry place just on the other side of town...hmm...we should probably get some of those. Since our blueberry bushes aren't going to have any blueberries for a while...little twigs that they are. :p Well, actually some of them are looking better and have leaves and all...but they're still not exactly about to have tons of blueberries.
I got up early again today and just gardened instead of jogging or something...I felt like I accomplished more with the gardening anyway, and it was a lot more fun! :p
The squash now has mulch around it and a nice dusting of Sevin dust, and I also mulched my tomatoes and green peppers. We have lots of weeds that need to be pulled, but the ground is so dry the weeds don't even come out. I suppose they might come out with a trowel, but I was just tugging on few by hand. Lovely...and who has time, or wants to weed anyway?! *sigh* But it'll have to be done sometime...our yard is going to be looking like a jungle soon. Fortunately Dad cut the grass really short last time he mowed, so maybe we won't have to be in a hurry to fix the leaky lawnmower at least! :)

Yeah, I was going to say I think blackberries grow wild... I also think I remember hearing, when I was a child, that there are some poisonous berries that grow wild, but maybe I just imagined it...
I weeded today too. All morning to be exact. I was not to much fun. We are growing peas so I had to go into the woods and find sticks to hold them up. Our seeds that we planted are not doing so well. Only a few have come up and we planted them weeks ago.
Ugh, weeding isn't fun at all, is it, Anna? :(
Wow, peas! Down here it's already too hot for peas...plus something (rabbit or deer) ate the ones I planted this Spring, so I'll have to try again in the fall.
And my lettuce seeds didn't come up this year either, were your seeds left over from last year? I had to get some new lettuce seeds, and I ended up planting it in pots so that I could move them into the shade...it is just SO hot around here! What stuff did you plant?
You're making me hungry...and now I suddenly feel inspired to garden! Too bad the soil around here is terrible for growing anything in except herbs and tobbaco...
I imagine that inspiration will wear off when you step outside in the heat! LOL!
Well, you could grow herbs then...and blackberries! Actually, that's a little further south than you are probably.
I don't know...I'm thinking about taking down the raised bed gardens I have and just planting in the regular old red dirt next year. Some people down the road from us have a really nice garden just planted in well-tilled red dirt.
Natalie, we grow blackberries, but only have a 20 foot row of them! With that row we got about two gallons every other days! I am not sure how many we will get this year, because we had about four plants die! In about two weeks we should be getting them. Please tell us if you want any! Then we could meet you!
Oh! Blackberry plants do not start giving blackberries until two years after you plant them!
Wow, you sound excited Annabeth! :p Lots of exclamation points! lol! :)
I assume your parents know you're offering blackberries...or do ya'll usually sell blackberries?
I'm not sure how we'd work it out, but that would be fun...it would be cool to meet you!
Hmm...would finding someplace that sells two-year-old blackberry bushes work, or would they still have to be in the ground for a while? I didn't realize blackberries were like that, I know blueberries take a few years to get going.
Have you ever gone blueberry picking at Lauren's grandparent's house? That's so much fun, we got a ton this one time and ate blueberry crisp the next morning for breakfast!
No, I haven't...do they live in Winston-Salem?
Natalie, we give away our blackberries. I have no idea about buying blackberries a few years old. I know we planted them and had to wait a few years.
