The good, and the not-so-good

We were over at the pastor's house for lunch, so I got to see how their addition is going...this is what Dad and the other guys got done yesterday: mudding!

Actually some girls helped too...if I'd known that I would have gone along and helped! The mudding would be fun, but I think the next job is going to be painting...and I'm not real fond of painting! :)

But I made a cake yesterday instead:

Pistachio pudding cake...I was trying to use up some pudding mix leftover from last week...I certainly don't want any more pudding! I wasn't quite sure how this was going to turn out, but it's really moist and yummy. The only problem I had was with the frosting...it was supposed to have a whole package of pistachio pudding mix in it, but I only had one, and didn't really want the frosting to taste a lot like pistachio anyway. So I just saved out a tiny bit of pudding mix to put in it, but then I couldn't tell how much milk I really needed to add since I didn't have as much pudding as the recipe called for. So it was a little hard to get the frosting to stay on the cake, but it tastes good! :)
And I think Dad needed to have some good cake after having to come up with excuses on, Friday I think it was, for not eating a banana cake with peanut butter frosting that was for his co-worker's birthday! He said he got to work and everyone's going on about this cake, but when he found out what it was he was like, "Uh, I just ate breakfast. I'm saving room for lunch... I'm still full from lunch!" :) Apparently everyone else liked the banana/peanut butter combo! Does anyone else think that sounds nasty? Maybe we're just weird...

And while Dad was helping put together parts of a house, parts of our house were coming off! Well, just one actually, but an inconvenient one:

It was windy yesterday, so it blew the fascia board off the end of the house...we've seen this happen on the two-story houses in our neighborhood, but ours is short enough it's not been blown quite as hard. I went and got Grandpa's extension ladder and with the help of a rake, got ahold of the piece that was flapping around and pulled it all the way off before it got bent any more. Unfortunately the extension ladder isn't long enough to reach all the way to the top of the house for Dad to reinstall this...one of the men in our church said he has a 24-foot ladder though, so we'll borrow that. We're a bit surprised the board's stayed up there as long as it has, it was just nailed up there with a few little tiny tacking nails! I think Dad's going to either borrow a nail gun and nail it thoroughly or screw it on with some galvanized screws. And actually it was Colin that told us it was coming off. He was outside and came rushing inside yelling, "There's pieces coming off of our house!!!" So really...it could have been large chunks of siding the way he sounded!

So, an exciting weekend! :p And now I think I'll go eat some cake...

The cake looks good. I like peanut butter and bananas, but I don't know how it would taste in cake form.

That sounded really strange.

I love banana cake with peanut butter frosting! I have a good recipe if you want to try it...lol! Don't you ever dip your bananas in peanut butter, or put peanut butter on banana bread?

Sorry I haven't e-mailed in ages. Things have been kind of crazy lately, but I'm hoping to send you a sufficient apology e-mail soon.

No problem! :)

No, I haven't put peanut butter on bananas...I guess I like my peanut butter and banana both in small doses and not together! lol! I like peanut butter on sandwiches and toast and occasionally in cookies, and my bananas in smoothies! ;p I know most people like peanut butter desserts, but for some reason I'm just not big on them! I should probably try peanut butter with banana sometime though... :)

Natalie, your ladder is tall enough for you to get on the roof, isn't it? I don't think your roof is too steep to just trek up the side, lean over, and tack that nasty little strip of tin back on. :)

(It'd probably be safer than doing it from a ladder; you'd have secure footing and the freedom to use both hands without feeling like you're going to wind up in the bushes.)

Btw, just about any kind of ring-shanked nails should hold. I don't know why the builders go so cheap that they won't spend 2% more on the right kind of nails (or just glue the pesky things in place).

Btw, I just *have* to ask: why does the wall have both horizontal and vertical seams? Usually, you either mount all the drywall horizontally (and risk a bowing seam when the upper panel sags) or all of it vertically. Either way, you only have to tape & mud in one direction.

Maybe the picture just shows the section where they used up a lot of scrap wallboard pieces?

Peanut Butter and Bananas would probably go fine together in a cake. I think I have had a peanut butter and banana sandwich; I know I have had them separately. I also remember rolling a banana in peanut butter once, (I think,) but I am not sure why. I have also had banana ice cream with Reese's Pieces or Reese's Peanut Butter cups. YUM!

Yeah, Dad thought about getting on the roof, Uncle Jim...but I think he decided he didn't want to try that, even though there are some nice springy juniper bushes under where he'd fall... :p

About the drywall...um...because Dad wasn't in charge of it? :) We weren't sure about the horizontal seams to begin with, but that's what their contractor said to do. The ceilings are just over 8 foot, so maybe it would have been more expensive to get 10' sheets and cut them? Oh, I just went back and looked at that picture too...I'm really not sure what was going on with that double seam thing on the right hand wall...
